Professor Dr. Hans-Peter Marti is an internationally recognized nephrologist and physician-scientist with dual academic appointments at the University of Bern (Switzerland) and the University of Bergen (Norway). He earned his MD from the University of Basel, completed board certifications in Internal Medicine and Nephrology (FMH) in Switzerland, and holds a PhD-equivalent medical doctorate (Dr. med.). In recognition of his contributions to renal medicine and transplantation, he received an Honorary Doctorate (Dr. h.c.) from the Medical University of Varna, Bulgaria in 2013.
With a career spanning more than 35 years, Professor Marti has held leadership positions including Full Professor of Nephrology at the University of Bergen, Director of Medicine at Bürgerspital Solothurn, Deputy Director of Nephrology at the University Hospitals of Bern and Zurich, and most recently Professor of Nephrology at the University Hospital of Bern. His research focuses on glomerular and tubulointerstitial disease, transplantation, and translational nephrology, supported by over €11 million in research funding from national and international agencies.
He has authored or co-authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications, with an h-index of 31, and has supervised 18 PhD students, 6 postdoctoral fellows, and numerous MD theses. Professor Marti is an elected Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology (FASN) and serves on the Scientific Board for Highly Specialized Medicine (Switzerland), the ISN Clinical Research Program Committee, and the Editorial Boards of BMC Nephrology and Blood Pressure.
A former President of the Swiss Society of Nephrology and President of the Norwegian Society of Hypertension, Professor Marti continues to contribute to advancing kidney research and clinical care across Europe through his leadership, mentorship, and international collaborations.
