Dr. Dimitrios Petras is a senior nephrologist and Head of the Nephrology Department at Hippokration General Hospital, Athens, Greece. He obtained his MD (1987) and PhD (2008) from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and completed a fellowship in nephrology at San Bortolo Hospital, Vicenza, Italy, under Prof. Claudio Ronco.
With more than 30 years of professional experience, Dr. Petras specializes in acute kidney injury, CRRT modalities, critical care nephrology, glomerulonephritis, and cardiorenal syndrome. He established a multidisciplinary outpatient clinic for systemic and renal diseases in collaboration with cardiology and rheumatology departments.
He has held several leadership roles, including President (2022–2024), Vice President (2020–2022), and Secretary General (2018–2020) of the Hellenic Society of Nephrology, and currently serves as President of the Ethical and Scientific Committee of Hippokration General Hospital. Dr. Petras is also President of the Institute for Study, Research, Education, and Therapy of Vascular, Heart, Brain, and Kidney Diseases.
An active educator, he leads nephrology training programs and teaches in the Master’s program “Hypertension and Cardio-Renal Diseases” at the University of Athens. He regularly organizes and lectures at national and international meetings, particularly in the field of acute kidney injury and renal replacement therapy.
Dr. Petras is a member of ERA, ASN, the Hellenic Society of Nephrology, and the Hellenic Society of Transplantation, and serves as a reviewer for major journals including the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. His research and publications focus on AKI, CRRT, and glomerular diseases, contributing significantly to nephrology education and clinical practice in Greece and abroad.
