Dr. Milena Nikolova-Vlahova is an Associate Professor and practicing nephrologist at the Clinic of Nephrology, Department of Internal Medicine, University Hospital “St. Ivan Rilski,” Medical University–Sofia, Bulgaria. She obtained her MD degree from the Medical University–Sofia in 1999 and completed her PhD in 2007 with a dissertation on “Diagnostic and Prognostic Significance of Some Parameters of the Immune Response in Patients with Different Forms of Glomerulonephritis.”
She is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology and holds a second Master’s degree in Health Management. Dr. Nikolova is also trained in abdominal and Doppler ultrasonography of abdominal and superficial structures, with recognized competence in both conventional and Doppler techniques.
Her clinical expertise covers a broad spectrum of nephrological and internal medicine conditions, with a particular focus on glomerulonephritis, autoimmune renal diseases, and rare kidney disorders. She is also actively involved in patient care, diagnostics, and research in renal immunopathology.
Dr. Nikolova has published over 150 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and has an h-index of 6. Her academic contributions include numerous presentations at international nephrology congresses, mentorship of medical residents and PhD students, and participation in multi-center research initiatives.
She is a Board Member of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) for Central and Eastern Europe, a member of ERA, and serves on the BANTAO Board (Balkan Cities Association of Nephrology, Dialysis, Transplantation and Artificial Organs). Additionally, she is a member of the Bulgarian Society of Nephrology and the Bulgarian Physicians’ Union.
Dr. Nikolova contributes to the scientific community as an editorial board member of several journals, including the BANTAO Journal, Medical Review, Bulgarian Journal of Clinical Immunology, and MedInform. She speaks Bulgarian, English, Serbian, Russian, Spanish, and French.
