Ivan Bubic was born in Rijeka in 1972, he holds an MD and PhD from the University of Rijeka, where he defended his doctoral thesis in 2005 on the immunobiology of cytomegalovirus proteins and their interaction with NK cell receptors. His professional development includes specializations in internal medicine (2010) and subspecialization in nephrology (2015). Dr. Bubić has completed numerous postdoctoral trainings at prominent European centers, including excellence programs in Barcelona (Fundacio Puigvert and Hospital del Mar), advanced ERA-EDTA CME courses in epidemiology, dialysis, and transplantation, as well as hands-on education in peritoneal dialysis, renal denervation, and functional genomics in Budapest, Vicenza, Frankfurt, Berlin, and Greece.
A prolific scientist, Dr. Bubic has published over 45 scientific papers in leading journals indexed in Current Contents, SCIE, Scopus, Medline, and EMBASE, including 21 original works. His research has been cited more than 1,250 times, with an h-index of 15 and a notable average of almost 60 citations per published item. He is also the author of three book chapters, including a contribution to a Current Contents-indexed monograph on cytomegalovirus immunology. His scientific focus encompasses chronic kidney disease, transplantation immunology, dialysis techniques, CKD-associated infections, and post-transplant complications, with regular participation in European registry studies and clinical guidelines development.
Presently, he serves as an acting head of the Department of Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation at the Clinical Hospital Center Rijeka, chair of Department of Clinical Sciences at the Faculty of Health Studies University of Rijeka and as an associate professor at the Department of Internal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine University of Rijeka. Dr. Bubic is recognized as a leader and organizer, serving as president of the Croatian Society for Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation since 2024, after previous terms as vice president and secretary. He is an active member of the European Renal Association–EDTA, and he is frequently invited to speak at congresses, postgraduate courses, and multidisciplinary forums on subjects ranging from the future of dialysis and renal transplantation, to screening protocols for malignancies in transplant recipients, vaccine policies for immunocompromised patients, and clinical innovations in digital medicine.
Dr. Bubic actively cultivates mentoring relationships, supports national and international research networks, and contributes to registry projects that define contemporary standards in nephrology and transplantation.
